Sony's new PlayStation Plus model is out in North America, and subscribers to the Premium and Extra tiers are well served when it comes to open-world games. The platform is chock-full of massive maps that are just aching to be explored.

Skyrim's open-world approaches perfection as it encourages exploration and discovery. The main storyline is fine, but the game's success lies in its immersive locations, customization options, and character writing. Even as the years continue to pass, Skyrim still comes across as a big deal, and its addition to PS Plus Extra makes the service seem far more complete.

Horizon Zero Dawn is one of the best PS4 exclusives, which means it is also one of the best open-world games on PS Plus. Set in the distant future when humanity has regressed by centuries and Earth has become overrun by nature and machines, Horizon Zero Dawn unleashes players on a world overflowing with mystery, danger, and beauty.

Except for the first entry, PS Plus Premium has every Saints Row game, and they are quite different from each other. Saints Row 2 strikes a decent balance between serious and comedic storytelling, while the gameplay is serviceable but not particularly unique for the open-world genre. The campaign even includes a trip to Metropolis, although it is not a sandbox like the Dark Knight's hunting grounds.

Shadow of Mordor should be a newcomer's starting point, and it is arguably the more enjoyable of the two games. As the map is split into areas, the world is not quite as open as, for example, Skyrim, but the individual sections are quite large and can be explored freely. The Nemesis System also reflects the player's actions, making it seem like the world is constantly evolving.

The Long Dark is at its best when it just lets its users do their own thing. With death lurking around every corner, the game creates a constant sense of tension as players desperately attempt to keep their meters healthy in an environment that feels tailor-made to destroy them. The Long Dark is far from an easy game, although it does come with a variety of difficulty settings so that players can customize their experiences.

Kingdom Come's world is vast and naturalistic. While it might not contain as many awe-inspiring sights as some other settings found in the RPG genre, Bohemia is a fully-realized kingdom soaked in history. PS Plus Extra subscribers looking to immerse themselves in an open-world game should check this title out.

Originally released during the PS3 era, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning received a remaster in 2020. More than anything, this version helped put the game back on the market as it was not the easiest product to come by for a few years. Kingdoms of Amalur is a relatively straightforward fantasy RPG, and its story should not hold too many surprises for veterans of the genre. However, the game's world is refreshingly colorful and vibrant, helping to set it apart from some of its contemporaries.

Listed for release as early as February 18 on the Japanese Nintendo website is the Royal Edition of Warhorse Studios' 2018 PC, PS4 and Xbox One title. The Kingdom Come: Deliverance Royal Edition comes complete with the base game plus a range of downloadable content including From the Ashes and The Amorous Adventures of Bold Sir Hans Capon. The setting of the game is open-world, with many options to choose from. Henry can become a valiant knight, defending the weak, through vigorous training and upright moral code, a trader who amasses power alongside wealth, or an underground criminal operative. The choice lies solely on the player, and, as Henry is a blank slate, some roads are more difficult than others. The combat in the game is well-made, realistic, with every enemy feeling authentic, and not like mere cannon fodder.

This colossal game length can appear daunting, but gaining 100% is not necessarily worth rushing. Completing the main story is certainly worth persevering past the 80-hour mark, with the consideration that new players will take a while to become accustomed to the challenging gameplay.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla journeys to the land of the Vikings, delivering a brutal experience. The game has a long story that comes in at around 60 hours. Full completion doubles that time and then some. Vikings and piracy have been two of the more successful eras explored by the franchise, but Valhalla is much longer and packed than Black Flag could ever dream of being. Nevertheless, the story comes to a satisfying conclusion and is well worth the wait.

While certain sections can drag and require the player to break before trying again, the end-game is certainly worth grinding towards. Persona 5 deserves its place among the best RPGs out there. It will even become available to a wider audience in 2022, so PC, Switch, and Xbox players will finally get the chance to experience this exceptional game.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance's main story comes in at upwards of 40 hours of gameplay, but this can change from player to player. 100% completion would certainly be more than 100 hours, and additional time is encouraged through any future saves.

His tale isn't one of superhuman heroics and nation conquering, but instead the minutiae of how one ambitious and determined young man fits into a much bigger story.
